Making Fusion Work Part 2: Understanding Transport in Magnetically confined Plasmas

ABSTRACT

While much progress has been made toward understanding fusion plasmas, the fundamental difficulty of controlling the transport of energy and particles and thereby allowing the conditions for sustained fusion to occur still exists. In this talk we will continue to discuss transport issues and some possible techniques (with their physical mechanisms) for controlling the transport in the context of a "simple" 1-D transport model. In particular, the extention to hotter electrons, which is likely to be the case in ITER and working reactors. This model is based on the interactions between sheared flows and the underlying turbulent transport that has been discussed in previous recent talks on the fundamental dynamics of turbulent transport in the presence of sheared flows. Questions about the recent progress and the future are as always welcome.
